Choosing the correct handles for your replacement windows

How to choose the right handles for your replacement windows.

Choosing the right handles for your replacement windows might seem small, but it matters for both how your windows work and how they look. Whether you’re upgrading for improved energy efficiency, replacing old hardware, or simply looking for a new look, the right handles can make a real difference. This guide will help you pick the best option.

Before evaluating handle options, it helps to understand replacement window hardware in general. This includes everything required to open, close, and lock your windows. Handles are just one part, but they matter most because you use them every time you open or close a window.

Espagnolette (Espag) handles are common on modern uPVC and aluminium casement windows. The handle attaches to an internal gearbox with a spindle. When you turn the handle, the gearbox engages a multi-point locking mechanism to keep the window securely closed.

When choosing your handles, consider ease of use and durability:

  • Standard: You can choose between straight (inline) or angled (offset) handles, both of which fit uPVC and aluminium casement windows. Angled handles are a good choice if you want more space for your knuckles, making them easier to use without hitting your hand on the frame. Straight handles have a simple, non-handed design and offer a minimalist look.
  • Monkey Tail: These decorative handles are a good match for traditional, period-style, and cottage homes. They add a classic antique look to your space. They work well with timber-look or wood-grain-effect uPVC casement windows and are also available for aluminium windows.
  • Pear Drop: These handles are designed for modern uPVC windows, especially flush-fitting ones, and offer a classic, antique look.
  • Tear Drop: This handle is similar to the pear-drop style but has a more curved shape. It is ideally suited to aluminium casement windows.

A smooth operation is key, especially for larger windows that may require more effort to open and close.

You finally need to consider the finish of your replacement window handles. Ensure the finish you choose matches or complements your window frames and the room’s overall style:

  • White handles work best with white uPVC casement windows because they blend with the frame, creating a clean, simple look. They are a good choice for small rooms, as matching the window frames can make the space feel more open. While white handles can go with other frame colours, they are not ideal for natural-wood frames. In those cases, black handles are usually a better option.
  • Black handles are very versatile and work well in both modern and traditional homes. They are a popular choice for white frames, creating a bold contrast and highlighting the handles. Black also pairs nicely with light grey and cream frames, adding a modern touch without being too dramatic. They look especially good on monkey tail and pear drop handles when used with timber-look or wood-grain effect frames.
  • Silver handles are a great choice for modern homes. When paired with white window frames, they give a subtle, stylish update. On white wood-grain-effect uPVC frames, silver adds a clean, modern touch. Pairing silver handles with black frames creates a sophisticated look because of the strong contrast. They also work well with aluminium frames, giving a sleek and unified appearance.
  • Gold handles are ideal for adding warmth and elegance. They create a nice contrast with white frames, add a sense of luxury to black or anthracite frames, and lend a rustic or traditional feel to cream or wood-grain-effect frames.

Please note that some handles are compatible only with specific window styles and finishes.

A good-looking handle is important, but it should also work well. Choose handles that are easy to use and have a secure lock. If you have children at home, look for handles with built-in child safety locks to help prevent accidents.

When selecting handles for your replacement windows, consider the type, material, finish, and operation. The right choice can make your windows look better and work well for a long time. Whether you prefer a modern or classic look, the right handles can complete your window upgrade.

If you follow these tips, you’ll be ready to pick handles that look good and work well for your home.
